Paediatric Chiropractic Care

Individualised chiropractic care for children and families.

Choosing someone to care for your child is a decision you don't take lightly.

At My Family Chiro, we take a careful, individualised approach to working with children. We take the time to listen to parents, understand the child's history and assess each child according to their individual circumstances.

Chiropractic care for children is different

Children aren't simply small adults.

Their bodies, movement patterns and needs change as they grow and develop, so any assessment or care should take their age and stage of development into consideration.

At My Family Chiro, care is adapted to the individual child rather than applying the same approach to every patient.

What happens during a paediatric appointment?

1. We talk with you

We'll start by talking with the parent or caregiver about what's brought you in, your child's history and any concerns you have.

We'll also take the time to answer your questions.

2. We get to know your child

Depending on their age, we'll interact with your child in an age-appropriate way and help them become comfortable with the environment.

There's no need to rush.

3. We assess

An appropriate physical assessment will be performed based on your child's age, development and presentation.

4. We explain our findings

We'll explain what we've found and whether chiropractic care is appropriate.

If we don't believe chiropractic care is suitable, we'll tell you.

5. We discuss your options

If care is appropriate, we'll explain what we recommend and why.

You can then make an informed decision about whether you'd like to proceed.

What can children see a chiropractor for?

Parents may seek assessment for their child for a variety of musculoskeletal concerns, including:

  • Back or neck discomfort

  • Musculoskeletal injuries

  • Sporting injuries

  • Joint or muscle-related problems

  • Movement difficulties

  • Stiffness

  • Concerns following an injury

The appropriate approach depends on the individual child.

An assessment is the best way to determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your child.

Caring for young athletes

Children and teenagers involved in sport can experience many of the same musculoskeletal problems as adults, alongside the additional demands of growing bodies.

If your child is experiencing an injury or problem that's affecting their ability to participate in sport, we can assess their presentation and discuss appropriate options.

Where appropriate, this may include chiropractic care, exercise and movement advice, or referral to another healthcare professional.

A calm and child-friendly approach

We understand that a child may not be comfortable walking into a healthcare clinic and immediately wanting an assessment.

That's okay.

Our approach is to give children time to become comfortable and to communicate with them in an age-appropriate way.

For younger children, parents are involved throughout the process.

Our goal is for both you and your child to feel comfortable with what's happening.

Parents are part of the process

When it comes to caring for children, communication with parents is important.

We'll explain:

  • What we've found

  • What we recommend

  • Why we're recommending it

  • What the options are

  • When we think further assessment may be appropriate

You should never feel like you're expected to agree to something you don't understand.

Our job is to provide information and professional recommendations. Your job is to make the decision that's right for your child.

Experienced in paediatric chiropractic care

Dr Luke Schmidt has additional postgraduate qualifications in paediatric chiropractic care and has experience working with children and families.

His approach is based around individual assessment, clear communication and adapting care to the needs of each child.

When should you seek an assessment?

If your child has persistent pain, a musculoskeletal problem, an injury or something that is affecting their movement or participation in activities, an assessment may be worthwhile.

However, not every problem requires chiropractic care.

If your child's presentation suggests that another healthcare professional would be more appropriate, we'll recommend that.

How much does a paediatric consultation cost?

New Patient Paediatric Consultation — $115

The first appointment allows time to discuss your concerns, understand your child's history, perform an appropriate assessment and explain your options. Follow-up consultations are charged at $77 for a long paediatric consultation (30 minutes) and $55 for a standard paediatric consultation (15 minutes)
