Sports Chiropractic and Injury Care

Stay active. Move well. Get back to doing what you enjoy.

Whether you're a weekend warrior, competitive athlete, regular gym-goer or simply someone who enjoys staying active, injuries and niggles can get in the way of the things you love.

At My Family Chiro, we provide personalised chiropractic care for athletes and active people, with the aim of helping you understand what's contributing to your problem and supporting your return to the activities that matter to you.

Injuries don't always happen on the field

Sometimes an injury is obvious — a tackle, awkward landing, heavy lift or sudden change of direction.

Other times, discomfort gradually develops during training and starts affecting how you move.

You might notice:

  • Back or neck pain

  • Joint pain or stiffness

  • Muscle and joint discomfort

  • Sporting injuries

  • Training-related aches and pains

  • Reduced movement

  • Discomfort that affects your training

  • An injury that isn't settling as expected

Whatever the reason you're seeking care, the first step is understanding what's going on rather than simply treating the area that hurts.

Your sport and your goals matter

For an active person, the goal isn't always simply to "get rid of the pain."

You might want to:

  • Get back to training

  • Return to competition

  • Run without discomfort

  • Get back in the gym

  • Lift confidently again

  • Improve your movement

  • Stay active while managing an existing problem

We'll take the time to understand what you're trying to achieve and consider that when discussing your care.

What happens at your first appointment?

1. We talk

We'll discuss your injury or symptoms, how they started, your training and activities, and how the problem is affecting you.

2. We assess

I'll perform an appropriate physical assessment to help understand your presentation and determine whether chiropractic care is suitable.

3. We explain

I'll explain what I've found in straightforward language and discuss your options.

4. We treat, where appropriate

If chiropractic care is appropriate and you're comfortable proceeding, treatment may begin during your first appointment.

5. We make a plan

We'll discuss what I recommend and how you can work towards returning to the activities you enjoy.

Where appropriate, this may also involve exercise, movement advice or recommendations to work with another healthcare professional.

Chiropractic care for athletes

Chiropractic care can form one part of a broader approach to managing musculoskeletal problems and supporting an active lifestyle.

Depending on your individual presentation, care may include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments and manual therapy

  • Soft-tissue techniques

  • Mobility and movement advice

  • Exercise recommendations

  • Advice around activity modification

  • Guidance on returning to training

  • Referral to another healthcare professional when appropriate

Your treatment will be based on your individual needs rather than a predetermined treatment plan.

Experienced in working with active people

Dr Luke Schmidt has a strong interest in sports and musculoskeletal care, with experience working with athletes and active people.

His additional sports chiropractic qualifications and experience as a sports trainer have provided a strong understanding of the demands that training and competition can place on the body.

Whether you're competing at a high level or simply trying to stay active, the approach remains the same:

Understand the problem. Explain your options. Develop a plan that makes sense for you.

You don't have to be an elite athlete

Sports chiropractic isn't just for professional athletes.

You might be:

  • Playing local football

  • Running

  • Cycling

  • Lifting weights

  • Going to the gym

  • Playing tennis

  • Playing golf

  • Training for an event

  • Exercising for your health

  • Getting back into exercise after time away

If an injury or musculoskeletal problem is stopping you from doing what you enjoy, we'd be happy to assess whether we can help.

When should you see someone about an injury?

You don't necessarily need to wait until an injury becomes severe.

If discomfort is persistent, getting worse, affecting your movement or preventing you from participating in activities you enjoy, an assessment may be worthwhile.

And if your injury requires care outside the scope of chiropractic, we'll let you know and recommend an appropriate course of action.

How much does it cost?

New Patient Consultation — $115

45-minute appointment

Your first appointment gives us time to discuss your concerns, perform an appropriate assessment and explain your options.

Treatment may begin during your first appointment where appropriate.

Follow-up consultations are charged at $93 for a long consult (30 minute) or $72 for a standard consult (15 minutes)

There is no requirement to commit to a long-term treatment plan.

Not sure whether we can help?

That's completely understandable.
